Description L Mussidius Longuss Republican moneyer, known only from his coins. Coin Details: Obverse: Facing the bust of Sol, radiate and draped In Roman mythology, Sol was the revered god of the sun, whose significance was deeply ingrained in the fabric of ancient Roman society. Often associated with the Greek god Helios, Sol was believed to be the celestial embodiment of light, warmth, and life-sustaining energy. As a divine figure, he was depicted riding a radiant chariot across the sky, illuminating the earth with his brilliant presence. The worship of Sol was widespread throughout the Roman Empire, as his cult was essential to agricultural communities that depended on his life-giving rays for bountiful harvests. Reverse: Platform inscribed CLOACIN on which are two statues of Venus Cloacina, the platform still exists, on the North side of the Forum. Venus Cloacina was an ancient Roman goddess associated with purity, cleanliness, and the protection of the city’s sewer system. The name “Cloacina” comes from the Latin word “cloaca,” which means “sewer” or “drain.” Venus Cloacina was an aspect of the goddess Venus, who was primarily known for her role as the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. The worship of Venus Cloacina dates back to at least the 2nd century BCE. A shrine to the goddess, called Sacellum Cloacinae, was located in the Roman Forum. This shrine was dedicated to Venus Cloacina and symbolized the importance of cleanliness and sanitation in ancient Rome. The goddess was often invoked in cleansing rituals and was thought to protect against pollution and impurities.
