Description Cyrenaica. Cyrene – Tetradrachm around 400 BC Cyrene (modern-day Libya), Famous for its cultivation of Silphium, was so closely identified with the plant that it appears on the city’s coins. Silphium was an ancient, highly prized plant that grew predominantly in the region of Cyrenaica (modern-day Libya), once part of the Greek-speaking world. Renowned for its medicinal and culinary qualities, Silphium played a significant role in the economy and culture of the Greek colony of Cyrene, so much so that its image was frequently depicted on local coinage. These ancient coins, often featuring a stylized representation of the plant or its seedpods, serve as one of the few direct pieces of evidence attesting to Silphium’s historical importance and widespread appeal. In antiquity, Silphium was celebrated for its distinct flavor and potential health benefits, such as aiding digestion and acting as a possible contraceptive—though this latter use remains a subject of scholarly debate. The plant’s reputation for versatility led to strong demand across the Mediterranean world. Ancient writers, including Theophrastus and Pliny the Elder, documented Silphium’s value and lamented its scarcity. According to some accounts, Silphium’s popularity was so great that it was eventually harvested to extinction, or nearly so, by the first century CE. The depiction of Silphium on the coins of Cyrene conveyed not only the city’s prosperity but also symbolized its unique identity and natural wealth. Minting the likeness of this precious plant allowed the citizens to showcase their renowned exports and served as a subtle advertisement of Cyrene’s prominence to other regions. Although the plant has vanished, its legacy endures through these ancient coins and the writings of Greek and Roman authors who praised Silphium as a botanical treasure of the ancient world.
