Catanaean brothers (Amphinomos and Anapios) carried their parents to safety from Catania, Sicily, during an eruption of Mt. Etna, according to Roman myth. The reference to the Catanaean Brothers is a reference to the piety of Sextus Pompey to uphold the ideals of his late father, Pompey the Great. The image was done for open defiance of Octavian.
