Description In 1652, the General Court of the Massachusetts Colony authorized the minting of silver coins. This initiative led to the creation of the first series of coins in the New England coinage: the Shilling, Sixpence, and Threepence. Each coin in the New England series featured “NE” stamped on the front and a Roman numeral on the back to indicate its value, with “XII” representing the Shilling. These coins marked the first minting effort in the British American colonies. However, due to widespread clipping and counterfeiting, the production of the New England silver coins lasted only three months in 1652, making them extremely rare today. Consequently, the mint introduced the Willow Tree, Oak Tree, and Pine Tree Coinage series. The scarcity of original coins makes them highly sought-after items by collectors of Colonial American coinage.
