Claudius became the 4th Roman Emperor of the “Julio Claudian dynasty” (Augustus (Octavian), Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero) on the death of his nephew Caligula. In 43 A.D. he invaded Britain, thus beginning the Roman occupation which lasted until the fifth century. He married his niece, Agrippina the younger and adopted her son Nero who then became the heir to the throne.
